Why arrange a school trip to Berlin?

Berlin has become a culturally diverse, dynamic, exciting, and student-friendly capital at the forefront of European youth culture. Many scheduled and low-cost airlines fly to Berlin from the UK on a daily basis making a 3, 4 or 5-day itinerary easy to arrange. Berlin is an affordable destination with high standard hostel accommodation available and an easy to navigate public transport system. Berlin can easily be explored on foot or by using the u-bahn or s-bahn, making your school trip to Berlin a sustainable and less expensive option without the need for coach hire.

What can school groups see and do?

  • In Berlin, school groups have access to a large number of free visits including the Bundestag, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Palace of Tears, the Berlin Wall Documentation Centre and the Topography of Terror (former HQ of the SS and gestapo).

Popular museums include the DDR Museum, Checkpoint Charlie Museum and the TV Tower for panoramic views of the city.

We can book school groups a guided tour of Sachsenhausen (a former concentration camp) or the Hohenschonhausen Stasi Prison.

Berlin is a city of districts, and it is easy to include a range of cross-curricular visits all on one day of itinerary. Groups can easily walk from one historical site to the next and practice their German language skills on the friendly locals along the way.

How does it fit into the school curriculum?

Berlin is an excellent cross curricular destination covering German language, Art, Religious Studies and Design Technology. For History students we can design a tour to meet the requirements of your curriculum, whether that be the Weimar Republic, The Rise of National Socialism, the Cold War or a combination. For Art students we recommend visiting the East Side Gallery and the graffiti workshop and tour. School groups have the option of including German lessons with our partner German language school in the heart of the Mitte district.

Where can school groups stay?

School groups are spoilt for choice in Berlin with a variety of options all catering for the groups market. There are 6 x Meininger hostels, 4 x A&O hostels and 2 x Aletto hostels in Berlin. All offer ensuite rooms, restaurants serving student friendly food and lounges with pool tables. All are centrally located within easy reach of the airport and all the major sights and museums.

Does it make a suitable curriculum enrichment week trip?

The tour is very popular for school groups travelling in June and July as part of the curriculum enrichment week. It can cater to a wide range of subject areas. For curriculum enrichment week we can add in evening entertainment such as Ten Pin Bowling, a visit to Berlin’s Zoo or a boat trip on the River Spree.
