What happened on our inspection visit to the Euro Space Centre?

We organised to take 30 teachers from schools across the UK on an Inspection Visit to Euro Space Centre in Belgium.  It is conveniently located just off the main E411  in Libin, Transinne which is a very easy two and half hour transfer from Dunkirk / Calais.

This is one of our favorite STEM trips and schools return year after year.  This was an ideal opportunity for heads of science, EVC’s Physics teachers along with prep and junior school staff to experience the wonders and marvel of Euro space before bringing their pupils.

Where did we stay?

  • The wonderful part of Euro Space is once you have arrived you are hosted and accommodated in the purpose build accommodation Galactic Inn which is located within the space center itself.

The space themed rooms are set out across three floors with spacious bedrooms and dorms for staff and pupils all equipped with ensuite bathrooms.  The rooms are conveniently located just a doorway away from all the excitement and activities that that lay ahead on our trip.

All meals are served in the Voyager Café self-service restaurant so once you have arrived everything really is all under one roof.

What did you see and do?

Euro Space have a vast array of informative, educational, fun activities and interactive exhibits all of which can be tailored to enable you to experience what life is like in space and as an astronaut.

  • Our day started in the Space Hub an area dedicated to testing astronauts’ skills in preparation for space travel.

Next, we moved on to training and tested our resistance, (and stomachs!) to a rocket launch in the Space Rotor, Rotating Chair and Multi-axis Chair which is mounted to spin on 3 different axis to reproduce the feeling of disorientation and vertigo felt inside the spaceship where rotational axis aren’t controlled.  It seemed that the hit of the day was to experience weightlessness on the Free Fall Slide!  I think we can safely say we all found our inner child again!

One of my personal favorites was the Moon and Mars Walk XP Simulator.  This is a chair mounted on springs that makes you feel 1/6th of your weight on earth and simulates walking on mars and the moon.

  • Next was a briefing on the American space shuttle. Two played the role of simulator pilot and commander and six have ground control roles (flight director, weather, launch director, etc.). Together we accomplished all the real steps involved in a mission, from launch to landing to releasing a satellite and rendezvousing with the Space Station. It felt like we were on the set of Apollo 13!

Our competitive side of us came to the fore when we got into teams and built our very own micro rocket in the workshop. We were due to launch them upon completion but the weather wasn’t kind to us so we had to abort our mission!

All of this is a just a snippet of what is available and what we experienced.
