Talking you through a school ski trip to Austria
Over the February half term break, VIE’s General Manager, Silvia Vintem, and VIE’s Sales Manager, Niall Abbott, accompanied the Royal Russell School on an Intensive ski weekend to our resort in Axamer Lizum. Passengers flying into Innsbruck are fortunate. They will enjoy the most dramatic approach to any airport in Europe, as the aircraft descends through a deep mountain valley.
Every time the gently rolling foothills of the Alps suddenly give way to jagged Alpine peaks, with snowcapped mountains rising straight up in all directions, your heart skips a beat.
Where did we stay?
-
We stayed at the Hotel Dollinger, a traditional Austrian hotel within a 15-minute walk of central Innsbruck.
All guestrooms are cosily furnished, sleeping 2-3 students and equipped with en-suite facilities, TV, telephone and hair dryers. Axamer Lizum ski resort is only a 25-minute shuttle ride away.
What did you see and do?
Each day we had to wave off the group at the brand NEW 10-seater gondola lift providing a direct connection to the Hoadlhaus at 2,340m. We knew though that they were in safe hands with their VIE ski rep as well as the instructors from the Lindl Ski School. Axamer Lizum offers excellent progression opportunities from the nursery slopes to wide open pistes for intermediates and challenging fields for the more advanced. Our Ski School is run by Hugo Nindl, the renowned Austrian Olympic skier who was 14 times Austrian champion and 2 times World champion!
This allowed us time to visit the range of hotels in the area that accommodate our school ski groups from the ski in/ski out Hotel Olympia to the nearby hotels at Alpenkonig, Club Hotel and Hotel Tyrol, all within a short coach transfer of the ski resorts of Axamer Lizum, Seefeld and Kuhtai.
After a busy day on the slopes, we enjoyed traditional food served in the Hotel Dollinger’s restaurant, a pizza evening in Innsbruck and a fantastic quiz night hosted in the hotel.
Why book a school ski trip to Axamer Lizum?
Axamer Lizum is a quiet ski resort – free from holiday crowds and short on lift queues. The resort is located on what is known as ‘Tyrol’s sun terrace’, yet has a reputation for fantastic snow conditions and an extensive ski season extending from early December to late April. School ski groups can be assured of a memorable winter experience in this fabulous Austrian resort.
